BIM is coming...BIM has come...BIM has went beyond BIM

Dear Readers,

BIM is coming...

From year 2005, I am hearing that BIM is the future and when I go for BIM presentation in till today people say this is the future, but this is not the case anymore now.

Many consultants are enquiring us for BIM implementation, at least for the one project where it is mandated and they have to comply to the contract.

BIM has come....

The BIM is now no more in future, it is in present and it is around, many contractors and developers has started using BIM. There are various reasons for this, but it is certain that in the market where at each and every point, value for money is checked, BIM has made its presence.
For now almost everyone knows about BIM, some knows what is BIM, some wise are already fetching benefits of the BIM. For those who have not started to use BIM, this is now a good chance to upgrade themselves as the echo system has BIM models available to begin and work with. The excuse of other consultants are not using BIM is not valid today.

The BIM has went beyond the BIM.....

Furthermore as the BIM creates and provides a dynamically connected and organized data base, it is easy to read it programatically.
This opens a bigger avenues,
First, it can be added to instruments which are connected to satellites for GPS locations. With this site layouts can be carried out accurately, reducing the error and wastage of time and material and ultimately the cost. The construction progress can be captured and compare with the design BIM models for that date to check the accuracy and speed of the construction.
Second, the structured database can be sent on to cloud to utilize the power of cloud computing, Artificial intelligence & Machine learning and so on.
With power of cloud computing and AI , we can simulate the facility for various scenarios. For example for checking the cost of construction, response to hazards, Life cycle cost, and many more.
Third, the performance of the facility can be monitored and preventive maintenance can be carried out. Real-time information of the facility and its service providing elements, like supporting structure behavior, MEP equipment's behavior, and the occupants behavior can be captured. This real-time information can be analyzed for sudden change in behavior or if it is operating beyond normal levels, that will be informed to concern quick action team to avoid calamities.

Revit Families for Free

Revit for Architects : 21 Sites to Download Revit Families for Free
RevitCity is not just a place to download free Revit families, but it is also a central place where you can get your questions answered, share your latest ideas or creations, and easily find the content you are looking for.

Mestek has created a library of BIM objects for free download and use by the design community. Objects are available in the Autodesk Revit MEP .RFA format, and many objects are also stored as .ZIP files. Please note that some objects require the saving of both an .RFA file and a .TXT file in order to function correctly.

BIMObject is one of the world’s largest and fastest growing digital content management system for BIM objects. According to the website, you can download 33,837 product families, 244,292 parametric BIM objects and 16,493,712 products.

Another pretty good site with a large range, and easy to find Revit families. Both manufacturer specific and generic content, this is a great site to check out.

CADforum has a CAD/BIM block library with more than 13.000 blocks. Also, it has some tips for AutoCAD 2017, Revit 2017 and Inventor 2017.

6. Modlar
Modlar has a large collection of manufacturer specific products to use with your projects. It is all completely free, you just need to be signed in to download the files.
This is a great resource for manufacturer specific content from a huge range of product catagories. They claim to have “the largest library of BIM content in the UK”, and the site is easy to navigate, search, and filter to find exactly what you’re looking for.
For CAD and BIM resources, ARCAT is a one-stop-shop. Their free, no registration system has everything from concrete to pollution control system.

9. BIMetica (Spanish)
Again, another BIM library with a large amount of Revit families. Some categories are empty however which can be annoying!

A large library of mostly non-generic multi-disciplinary components by Autodesk. Users can quickly find product specifications for over 66,000 commercial and residential building products.
The National Bim Library offers a collection of free to download generic BIM components that are compatible with the major BIM products. NBS are better known for their specifications but have taken a strong interest in BIM recently. The library is still a little sparse but the basics are in place for a very useful resource.

Some useful free components especially strong on furniture and interiors.

13. TurboSquid
This site offers components which you pay for but there are a small amount of free items. TurboSquid have a Revit certification system that ensures the components meet minimum standards. Compare the prices to the time you might spend modeling the items.

A good place to find manufacturer specific content, a bit hard to navigate and find products without knowing the manufacturer first. Worth a look however.

15. Polantis
This site offers a huge range of 3d content, however a lot of the Revit families are not “true” Revit familes, in the sense they have been created in other 3d programs and just imported and saved as a Revit Family file. Good site if your just after content for visualization purposes.

16. BIMbox
Another great site from the UK, BIMbox have a decent amount of Revit content available for Free download. Most of the content is geared towards interiors (Sofas, Tables, Shelving etc.) and the site is well presented. Most Revit content is IFC compliant which is great.

17. Familit
RFA files are family files that can either be loaded using Revit familyManager into a project or saved externally. At the moment familit.com offers 18.000 free families in English, German and French language.

A good place to find manufacturer specific content, a bit hard to navigate and find products without knowing the manufacturer first. Worth a look however.

19. Bimstore
The Bimestore offers a library of BIM content by manufacturers in Revit, Microstation and ArchiCAD format. The content is free to download. You will need to register on the site first. They have an excellent guide to content creation.

20. CAD Notes
Very useful website maintained by Edwin Prakoso on everything related to AutoCAD, Microstation and Revit.

This site has a lot of SketchUp content – but also a whole heap of Revit families as well. A diverse range of products, with lots of Mechanical & Plumbing fixtures.

I Love 3D | BIM | VDC….

I Love 3D |BIM |VDC….

Almost 14 years back in year 2000, when I was a fresh Civil Engineer graduate, I started working with AutoCAD. I fall in love with 3D. I tried creating 3D models and rendering it. It used to be very painful to draw and model everything from basic 3D commands to shape up like a building. I used to imagine that there could be commands in AutoCAD like wall, door, window, floor, beam, column, footing etc. I read somewhere that what you think, imagine and desire for come true in next 5-6 years. In 2005, when I came to Pune, I got all these commands running in AutoCAD Architectural desktop. I started believing the 5-6 years concept. That time BIM was not said much but I was aware that 3D this was going to be the future. We were doing the clash check and utilities space reservation, drawings and schedules extraction from 3D models.

Today I am BIM manager (Specialist) in one of the European consultancy company. We use more advanced and sophisticated BIM & VDC tools like Revit, Civil 3D, Tekla, Navisworks, Tekla BIMsight, etc.

I gone through lot of hard work, mistakes and learning to come to this stage. We learn from the mistakes from others. We walk on the footsteps who are ahead and we avoid same mistakes and do new mistakes.

The aim of writing this blog is to let the new comers know
1. What is BIM and VDC?
2. How can they learn this new way and process of handling construction projects?
3. What are  the benefits of this process?
4. How can they shape their carrier in this new domain?

If you have any questions, post to me in comments and I will try to help you out.

Thanks,
Sandip
